Mike's Spotlight

Time is Running Out

Fact: According to a recent poll within 72 hours, 93% of the people who bid in the Newmont/Goldcorp Special Olympics auction woke up even more good looking and intelligent. Some winning bidders even went from a “3” to a “10”.  Provincial law prevents us from guaranteeing that but we like your chances.

This is just a friendly reminder that there’s just hours left to get instant entry into everyone’s good books. (The auction closes at 7:30 Thursday evening.)

Just CLICK HERE – sign up and start bidding on a variety of great items.

Are You Up For A Challenge?

See if you can outbid me.

Of course, the big reason is to help Special O provide life-changing opportunities and an essential bridge to the community at large for over 5,200 children, teenagers and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Every dollar raised in the auction enables another of our special needs individual to play a sport, maybe take a trip to a provincial championship or get some essential medical attention through Special O’s Healthy Athlete screening program. Your bid or donation will help another four year old join the renowned Active Start program in order to improve their motor skills.

If you’re not the winning bidder you can still go to the site and donate.

The action online auction runs through Thursday evening, June 20th, when the auction closes at approximately 7:30. And then winners will be notified.

Your help is important and appreciated.

Sincerely,

Mike

The Cost of Emphasizing Advocacy over Critical Thinking in Public Education

The massive increase in social discord and division has been fueled by the dominance of the progressive agenda in public educations.  It’s hardly a surprise that when students are taught there is only one valid opinion that they’ll dismiss…even attack any others.

A Very Uncomfortable Question

As you know, the MoneyTalks team are full on supporters of Special Olympics. Some will say I’m a pain in the ass about it. Thankfully many others appreciate hearing about the opportunity to help out.

I know that I can go on and on about the importance of helping individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families so I promise I will be brief and ask only one question. If someone you know had a child with Down Syndrome, autism or Fragile X …maybe a niece, nephew or grandchild – would you be more interested? Would you take a couple of minutes and bid on a silent auction item or donate or get the business you work for to sponsor?

My bet is yes, which is why is why I invite people to take a minute and think about these families and individuals. The difference you can make in their lives is huge. Obviously, I think that they deserve our help – many of our MoneyTalks listeners, clients and analysts agree.  I hope you do too.

And in addition to an easy online donation option – there is a fantastic opportunity to bid on some really cool stuff! You can donate and/or bid at the Special Olympics auction by going to newmontgoldcorp.com – bidding ends on Thursday at 7:30pm.

Going After Your Home

Someone pays income tax and a myriad of other taxes to the three levels of government – takes what’s left and buys a home. Then pays property taxes, insurance and upkeep but still some people think that it’s not enough.

I Need Some Help

Way too often children and adults with intellectual disabilities are overlooked, marginalized and isolated in our communities. A lot of people pay lip service to people with special needs but that doesn’t change a thing. It’s time to do more than talk.

As you may know Special Olympics provides an opportunity for children as young as 2 to participate in a variety of sports and developmental programs but you may not know that Special O also provides health screenings for our athletes, which have proven to literally be a life saver in some instances.

Just as importantly, for many of our athletes Special Olympics provides the only connection to the community at large.  It’s where they make friends. As one of our athletes said, “before I joined Special Olympics I didn’t know there were other people like me.”

I think it’s safe to say that for the vast majority of our athletes our programs end their isolation, build their self-esteem and have a profound impact on the quality of their lives and their families.

This is where you come in.

I am chairman of Special O’s biggest fundraiser of the year – The Newmont/Goldcorp Invitational Golf Tournament. In fact, it’s one of only two public fundraisers and hence is extremely important in enabling Special O’s programs to be available free of charge.  Obviously not everyone can participate in the golf tournament but we can all help by supporting bidding in our online auction.

It runs for only a week and closes the Thursday, June 20th.  You can bid right through the evening when the auction closes.  Not really different than if you were there, except you won’t have to hear me being a lame auctioneer.

Here are some sample auction items  …

  • Bose Quiet Control 30 wireless headphones
  • 100 Troy Ounce, .999 fine silver bar
  • Tofino storm watching getaway for 2
  • One week in a two-bedroom guest house in Scottsdale
  • Three bottle selection of classic Italian wine

Warning: you will be bidding against me on lots of these items – why? Because Special O athletes and their families deserve our support.
